Must-have Dresses for A/W12

As you can probably tell, I’m no Fashionista  – my pre-FrOctober concession to this years A/W colours was to buy a burgundy Breton Top (hardly directional) so I felt I needed an actual fashion insider to point us Frockers in the direction of some current dress trends. Today’s Guest post, from Alison at Not Another Mummy Blog, is all about the Must-Have dresses for A/W12 and while she uses her insider knowledge as a magazine editor to recommend some current buys from the high street, there’s no reason why you couldn’t look for these styles on eBay, in vintage or charity shops or hunt them down at a Swish!

We’re nearly halfway through FrOctober, and while it’s important that no one breaks the bank buying lots of dresses, it’s starting to get trickier to restyle the same frocks in a new way. So one (or two) new buys won’t hurt… will they? If you’re looking to splash out, do it in style. Here are some of the key trends for Autumn/Winter.

Cocoon dress

Boyish or apple shaped? Then this dress shape is for you. It’ll show off amazing legs and hide tums. Brilliant! This bargainous River Island number will only set you back a tenner, and can be dressed up for a cocktail or two, or smartened up for work.

Kimono dress

The Duchess of Cambridge clearly knows her trends, as she wore a Jenny Packham kimono style dress when she arrived in Singapore last month on her tour of Asia. This purse-friendly frock from Oasis has a beautiful Eastern bird print and if you swap the belt for a chunkier version, you’ll get a bit more bang for your buck.

Houndstooth dress

This print is everywhere this season (House of Holland and DvF rocked bright coloured versions on their A/W12 catwalks) and this New Look dress has a hint of a skater skirt to it, so it’s a double trend whammy.

Baroque dress

The slightly regal feel to this print will make you feel like a million dollars. This gold and black frock from Vero Moda is perfect for festive parties, so it’ll have a bit of post-FrOctober mileage in it too!

LOL – as someone whose best asset is not her legs, I’ll probably look out for dresses in the styles that Alison recommends, rather than going for these exact ones x

@Emma, the first one is knee length (tricky to tell when it’s not on a model) so not a thigh in sight when you wear that!

I didn’t include any mid length dresses as they are notoriously tricky to wear – knee length or above the knee frocks are easier… just stick on opaque black tights and some boots/shoes and you’re good to go!
